Promotion design guide

How to design a customer promotion people can understand.

Connect the offer, entry conditions, reward and redemption process before choosing the game or visual treatment.

Designing a Promotion Customers Can Understand

Explain the offer before the interaction

A promotion is a promise about participation and a possible benefit. The organiser needs to define that promise before the campaign is designed. Customers should understand who can take part, what the outcome means and how a valid reward is used. Start with the business purpose and the practical fulfilment process. A simple campaign with clear rules can be easier to operate and assess than a complex game with uncertain conditions. The actual mechanism and markets need campaign-specific review before launch.

Define the purpose

Choose the behaviour the promotion is intended to support, such as a return visit or engagement with an offer. That purpose should explain the reward and the interaction.

Identify the organiser and audience

Confirm who runs the campaign, who may participate and where it applies. Keep the actual territories and eligibility conditions visible in the planning record.

Write the significant conditions

Establish the dates and timezone, entry method, entry limits, available rewards and redemption conditions. Customers should be able to understand material restrictions before they participate.

Map the claim process

Decide how a valid reward is recognised and fulfilled. Test duplicate claims, expired rewards and unavailable inventory. Staff need an operating process, not just a screenshot of the winner screen.

Separate unrelated choices

Keep public reviews independent of participation and benefits. Any marketing choice needs its own appropriate treatment. Receiving a game outcome should not silently create a different customer commitment.

Distinguish test and live states

A sample outcome demonstrates the interface. A live campaign needs approved rules, funded rewards and a tested fulfilment process. The customer-facing wording should make the actual state clear.

Measure the intended result

Visits, entries, valid redemptions and repeat purchases describe different stages. Decide which can be recorded and how they relate to the campaign objective. Participation alone does not establish profitability.
