Google Maps calls are not the same as answered enquiries
If your report shows 40 calls, does that mean 40 conversations? Check what was counted before treating the figure as sales activity.
Google Business Profile’s “Calls” metric counts clicks on the profile’s call button. It does not, by that definition, establish that a conversation took place or that a customer booked. Google separately defines website clicks as clicks on the profile’s website link. See Google’s metric definitions.
This matters when a report turns platform activity into a sales claim. “Call button clicks increased” and “we received more qualified enquiries” need different evidence.
Keep the stages separate
| Stage | What you know | What you still need |
|---|---|---|
| Someone taps the profile’s call button | A recorded interaction occurred | Whether a call connected |
| A call reaches the business | The phone system received it | Whether it concerned suitable work |
| Staff speak to a potential customer | A conversation occurred | Whether the requirements fit |
| An order is agreed | The business has an agreed piece of work | Its value and delivery status |
For example, imagine a report contains 40 profile call clicks, 12 phone enquiries and three bookings. Those invented totals do not establish a 7.5% Maps booking rate. The 12 calls and three bookings could include other sources, and the records have not been matched. You need a link between the events before making that attribution.
If the figures do not match
Start with simple checks. Is the profile number correct? Does it reach the intended phone? What happens when nobody answers? Are the reporting periods the same?
Then ask the team how enquiries are recorded. Calls handled on another number, repeat callers and customers who enquire by email can make an unqualified comparison misleading.
What to ask your agency
Ask: “Which number is a button click, which is a received call, and which is an enquiry our team qualified?” Each should have a named source and date range. If bookings cannot be linked to those enquiries, the report should say so.
